The purpose of this book is not to set out to be the definitive statement on erotica and prostitution, but rather an attempt to define how feminine sexuality and prostitution were conceived of and constructed through specific representation in Mesopotamia from approximately 2,000 to 1,250 BC. This study aims to examine laws, literature, erotic poetry, and images without trying to contemporize the topic. Rather, examine the primary and secondary sources of information to uncover a realistic portrayal of the situation as it had actually occurred.
When scholars or historians try to draw modern conclusions to ancient history and it can be problematic for a variety of reasons. Within the context of prostitution and sexuality, the understanding relies heavily on deciphering its moral codes, ethics, laws and religion for each localized region. In many cases this information may be unsubstantial to formulate entire conclusions; however concise documentation on what was found can be cataloged for future debate. As more and more records are discovered history will rewrite its self accordingly.
